Starling murmurations: A stunning spectacle in the sky

A natural wonder returns

The starling murmurations have returned to Gretna. Tens of thousands of birds take to the skies every sunset.

It is a sign of the changing season, our weather presenter Ross Hutchinson went along to witness the natural phenomenon.

No one knows exactly why they do this. Does it offer safety in numbers?

Is it to keep warm or to exchange information?

It’s one of nature’s mysteries. All we can do is watch and wonder as we witness their performance before roosting for the night.
