Sunderland legend Kevin Ball has told of his pride after Jordan Pickford's penalty heroics helped England book their place in the World Cup quarter finals.

England won their first penalty shootout since 1996 to reach their first quarter final in 12 years.

Speaking to ITV News Tyne Tees, Ball said: "I was like an expectant father. I was walking the floors, pacing, my missus was going 'where you going?' and I just said 'I can't watch it'."

"I went to the garden, came back in and screamed; it was a tremendous moment and one we all felt very proud about."

Pickford attended St Robert of Newminster RC School in Washington. His old PE teacher, Alan Fisher, said he was a distinctly sporty pupil.

He said: "He always was a standout pupil for various sports whether it be football, cross country or tennis. He had this winning mentality and I think that's one thing he showed last night."

Pickford, a childhood Sunderland fan, came through the ranks at the Black Cats before spending time out on loan at Darlington, Carlisle and Preston North End.

He returned to the club in 2016 although following their relegation to the Championship in 2017 he joined Everton for a £25m fee.
