Joe McElderry cancels Consett gig after 'suspicious letter'

Former X Factor star Joe McElderry was forced to cancel a gig at the lastminute after it emerged the venue had received a 'suspicious letter' daysbefore.

But the South Shields star, called off the show shortly before he was due on stage after being told the theatre had received the letter three days earlier.

In a statement the Climb singer said:

Earlier today, followers were told: "Due to an incident beyond our controllast night at The Empire Theatre Consett, Joe’s performance was cancelled.

"All ticket info please contact the box office."

Fans tweeted the star messages of support.

Rosie said: "You did exactly the right thing in my opinion ?Stay safe loveand have a great show tonight xxx."

Michelle added: "Glad you’re safe Joe & it sounds like you took exactly theright course of action xx."

Some blamed the theatre for not letting McElderry know sooner.

Violet Liane said: "Safety always comes first, you are very wise to cancelso everyone can be safe. But the theatre is not very wise to tell you lastminutes before the show. Thank goodness we have you to do the right thing for everyone's sake. Respect to you Mr. McElderry!"

Jacquie Lemon added: "I wish the theatre had alerted you and Team Joeearlier so you didn’t have to go through such a horrible experience on stage.Sending love to all for tonight's show xx."

McElderry is due to play Whitley Bay Playhouse tonight, with his tour tocontinue in Swindon and then Cannock.

The Empire Theatre was contacted for comment but there was no one available to speak.
