'Lambing Live' returns to Saltholme

Moo the sheep (seen here as a lamb) is a star attraction at Saltholme

Lambing Live is returning to RSPB Saltholme this Easter, with special new arrivals expected at the reserve, courtesy of Saltholme’s beloved Moo the sheep.

Moo – a firm favourite with visitors – was born shortly after the spate of dog attacks at the nature reserve in 2015/16 which led to the death of 50 sheep. Moo’s mum was injured but survived and went on to give birth to Moo – aptly named after her cow-like markings.

Moo is now expecting and is giving birth to her first lamb (or lambs) during this year’s Lambing Live event.

Lambing Live, running from 30 March – 15 April, is gearing up to be even bigger and better than before. RSPB Salthome, near Stockton-on-Tees, will welcome thousands of visitors during the event to see its newborn lambs and take part in a fun-filled events programme.

As well as visiting the newborns in the lambing shed, visitors can hold baby chicks – a first for the reserve - create finger puppet arts and crafts and take part in a special quest across the nature reserve to win a certificate.

Games and activities including giant jenga, hoops and bowling are available throughout the Lambing Live event, and the site is running Gator rides over the Easter weekend.

Throughout the 2018 Lambing Live event, the reserve entrance fee is reduced by 50% to £2.50 per car (no cost for those travelling by public transport and free for RSPB members).

To join in all the fun Saltholme is offering Lambing Live children’s activity passes at £5 per child which are payable on the day – the pass includes; access to the lambing shed to see the new arrivals, chick activities and chick handling in the Visitor Centre, finger puppet arts and crafts, an exciting adventure quest with certificate, plus activities on the events field including giant Jenga, bowling and hoops.
