Home owners warned not to do business with cold callers following Storm Eleanor

North Yorkshire trading standards officers are warning householders following Storm Eleanor not to do business with roofers and other tradespeople who knock on their door uninvited.

After last night’s stormy weather there is a risk that rogues might see an opportunity to cold call residents and make false claims about the need for repairs.

Trading standards advice is never to agree to have work done by cold callers.

If you are concerned that your roof or other parts of your property have been damaged in the storm, North Yorkshire trading standards officers have issued the following advise:

County Councillor Andrew Lee, portfolio holder for trading standards said: “Officers find that rogues have used tactics including carrying loose tiles around with them to convince householders that their roof has been damaged. If someone knocks at your door and tells you your roof has been damaged by wind be suspicious. Close the door on anyone who approaches you in that way.”
