Medieval Newcastle building added to at risk list

A medieval building on Newcastle's Quayside has been added to a list of historic buildings in the region said to be at risk.

The Cooperage was built in the 16th century and was lasted used as a bar before it closed in 2005.

Historic England have released their Heritage at Risk Register which lists the Cooperage. In the north east, it lists 299 sites that are at risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

Across the region 20 sites have been removed from the Register because their futures have been secured, while 21 sites have been added to the Register because of concerns about their condition.

Buildings removed from the list include Sockburn Hall, Sockburn, Darlington. ockburn Hall is a country house overlooking the River Tees, built in 1834 in local sandstone and designed in an ornate neo-Jacobean style. The Hall changed hands in 2015 and the new owner began an extensive repair scheme.
