Sunderland house explosion caused by gas

Police have confirmed that an explosion in Sunderland that left a woman with serious injuries was caused by a gas explosion.

Half of a semi-detached house was completely destroyed on Rosslyn Avenue after an explosion at 8.50am on 11 August.

Officers say the gas supply has now been capped and made safe and there is no third party involvement.

Work is on-going to secure the site and as such there is still a cordon in place.

Police say emergency services and local authorities are 'working tirelessly' to allow residents to return to their homes as quickly as possible.
