Increased security for the 37th Blaydon Race
Organisers of the Blaydon Races say they're increasing security measures for the popular Tyneside event in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in the UK.
Event organisers held a meeting with Northumbria Police, Newcastle Council and Gateshead Council where general safety and security measures were reviewed and subsequently, additional measures have been put in place for the anual event.
Road users are being warned to expect delays and traffic congestion between Newcastle and Blaydon on Friday, 9 June due to increased road closures.
Scotswood Road, Scotswood Bridge and Chainbridge Road will be fully closed to traffic between 6.00pm and 9.30pm on Friday evening.
There will be congestion in Newcastle City Centre, Blaydon and other roads in and out of the City, with potential delays and diversions for drivers.
Drivers are advised to avoid the affected areas if possible and allow additional time for any necessary journeys that they do need to take at this time.
As well as the changes to the traffic management of the race, there will also be a significant increase in police and event security personnel at the event to ensure the safe running of the 37th Blaydon Race.
The event Organisers, Newcastle Council and Gateshead Council apologise for any inconvenience and would like to thank everyone for their patience and co-operation during the running of the race.
