Sunderland fan blog: 'So it's finally over...'
An interesting week? Not for Sunderland supporters it isn't. In the few days that have passed since the Boro game, our mood has had no reason to uplift itself. The manager's post -match assessment that if we play like that we'll get points didn't win him any friends, because we saw how bad we were, and that a team as bad as Boro had managed to beat us. David, it's simple and it's obvious - if we play like that, we'll get walloped by better sides than Boro.
I'm sorry if that sounds a bit negative, but the time for positivity has run out, and as I've said before (many time, probably) it's ridiculous that, having played as badly as we have, we weren't relegated a month or more ago. That there's still the faintest pulse left in our season is a miracle, and we're left with the situation this morning that even if we lose, we're not dead if Hull lose as well.
Madness. If we were a horse, we'd have been put out of our misery, and I think I speak for more than just myself when I say that my mindset recently has been "just get it over with, please." It doesn't hep that them up the road just recorded their 14th away win of the season, evoking memories of our last promotion campaign under Keano - who's being touted by a fair few fans as the man to come in and set us right. I can't see it myself, but I've seen stranger appointments here - Di Canio. Butcher. Pick a daft name, but we'll probably keep Moyes anyway.
So it's finally over, after a game in which we had enough chances to win three but were hit in a late break that resulted in the division's second goal of the afternoon. Hull's point at Southampton killed us, but the actuality of confirmed relegation wasn't personally as painful as previous ones as we've been drip-fed it for weeks, even months.
Oh dear. Life goes on. See you next season
