Lizzie Deignan wins the 2017 Women's Tour de Yorkshire

Lizzie Deignan has won the 2017 Women's Tour de Yorkshire after a stunning solo breakaway.

The Otley rider took to the front of the field with an eight-strong group following the Cote de Lofthouse, which was the race's only categorised climb on the Tadcaster to Harrogate stage.

The lead group thinned out to three riders, with Deignan and her Boel-Dolmans teammate Anna van der Breggen and British sprinter Dani King.

Deignan was cheered on by thousands of spectators, with the crowds swelling in Ripon as she raced ahead to win the second and final intermediate sprint section.

She then broke away on her own with 14km to go and gained a minute on the chasing riders.

With around 5km to go on the ride into Harrogate, the chasing pack slowed, struggling to hunt down Deignan.

The 28-year-old former Road Race World Champion was cheered over the line in Harrogate with a beaming smile.
