England call up for Sunderland striker Defoe
Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has been given a surprise call up to the England squad.
The 34-year-old will join the rest of Gareth Southgate's men in England's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.
Defoe took to social media to thank fans for their messages of congratulations.
Gareth Southgate sprung several shocks when he named his first England squad since becoming permanent manager.
Injuries to Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Harry Kane have led to Sunderland's Defoe who last capped in November 2013, being brought back into the fold.
Southgate says he thinks the Black Cats striker has a point to prove.
Speaking at a press conference after announcing his squad the England manager also pointed to the new names in his squad.
