Record figures show that January’s NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week delivered a major boost to business worth over half a million pounds.

Over 100 restaurants took part in the week, the largest number ever to register for the event.

As well as the highest number of participating restaurants, other records were broken during the week, which ran from 16th to 22nd January. Nearly 45,000 people dined out over the course of the event, 10,000 more than in 2016.

January was the 13th NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week held since the event was first launched in 2011.

The idea originated from New York, where twice a year diners get the chance to eat out at some of the city’s top restaurants for a fraction of the normal price.
