HSBC announces six branch closures in the region
HSBC has announced the closure of 62 bank branches across the UK.
Seven of these will be in the Tyne Tees region - they are:
Alnwick
Consett
Easingwold
Leyburn
Stokesley
Team Valley, Gateshead
HSBC said the decision was due to changes in the way people do their banking.
A spokesman said over the past five years, the number of customers using HSBC branches has fallen by almost 40%.
93% of customers’ contact with the bank is now completed via the telephone, internet or smartphone, and 97% of cash withdrawals are made via an ATM.
HSBC is not the first bank to announce branch closures, due to changing customer needs.
Last week Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank said they were closing dozens of branches across the UK including some in the region.
