Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird has been made a Dame in the latest New Year's Honours.

Dame Vera has been honoured for services to Women and Equality.

Before becoming a crime commissioner, Dame Vera was a lawyer, an MP for Redcar and a Government Minister.

As a lawyer she represented some of the miners caught up in the so-called Battle of Orgreave, in 1984.

She said: “This was very delightful and surprising news.

“I am particularly pleased that the award specifically refers to services to the cause of women and equality, recognising that gender equality is desirable for the country and for everyone in it. There have been great advances but there is still more to do."

She added: “I feel truly proud to receive this honour, and see it as giving the cause of equality a boost. I would like to thank all the many people who have supported, helped and encouraged me over the years. We must continue to work together to achieve the equality we are fighting for."

Newcastle Eagles head coach Fab Flournoy was made an MBE for services to British basketball and the community in the North East, while Paralympic gold medalist Matt Wylie, from Washington, was awarded an MBE for services to swimming.
