Bigg Market toilets - they'll cost more than a penny!
The underground toilets in the Bigg Market have been a landmark since they opened in 1898, and provided relief for generations of Geordie gents...
Now though - they could be yours!
They have been boarded up since 2012 when budget cuts forced their closure - but Newcastle Council have put them up for rent.
A previous attempt to sell the toilets in August 2012 disappeared 'down the pan' but since then NE1 has secured £3m of funding for a massive revamp of the Bigg Market, and it’s hoped this will be enough to trigger a chain reaction and find a new tenant.
It’s hoped that with regeneration of the Bigg Market some money might be available for the refurbishment of the toilets, but this is not guaranteed.
The circular Victorian structure covers an area of 63sq metres and is accessed down a single spiral set of stairs.
It has a metal and glass pitched roof with a ventilation tower.
Inside it boasts 18 urinals, five cubicles and a toilet attendant’s office.
The asking rent for the property is £20,000 per annum, subject to contract.
