Stars of 'I, Daniel Blake' honoured with new award

Ken Loach's film I, Daniel Blake - set in Newcastle - has been celebrated at the British Independent Film Awards, with star Dave Johns named best actor and his co-star Hayley Squires named most promising newcomer.

It tells the story of a man who struggles to find his way around the benefits system after falling ill.

He meets single Mum (Hayley Squires) who he befriends as she struggles to support her two children after being sanctioned.

Coming-of-age drama American Honey was the big winner at the ceremony.

The movie, which stars Shia LaBeouf and Sasha Lane, was named best British independent film, while Lane won the best actress award, film-maker Andrea Arnold took the best director award and Robbie Ryan's cinematography was rewarded with the outstanding achievement in craft honour

The 19th Bifa ceremony was hosted by Jennifer Saunders at Old Billingsgate.
