Residents in County Durham woke up to a blanket of fresh snow this morning as temperatures plunged to below freezing.

Around 13cm of snow covered the ground and rooftops in the town of Barnard Castle.

There was difficult driving conditions for commuters on the A66 asblizzards hit the main road.

A spokesperson for the MET office said the snow fell overnight and earlythis morning as temperatures dropped to -0.2 °C.
