Traffic Wardens in Sunderland will be patrolling the streets until 10pm after the council announced plans to increase its enforcement of evening and weekend parking regulations.

The extension of enforcement hours is set to begin on Thursday, December 1.

It follows further reviews of the service and feedback received by the council.

In Sunderland city centre, there are more than 1,500 parking spaces, and the council say parking is free after 6pm at the majority of surface car parks.

The Council says that the cost of a penalty charge in Sunderland may be either £50 or £70 depending on the seriousness of the contravention.

For example a penalty charge notice served where a vehicle has overstayed the period purchased may incur a £50 penalty charge, whereas a vehicle observed parked on a yellow line may incur a £70 ticket.
