Co Durham park nominated as best in the UK
An 18th century Grade 2 listed site has been nominated for the best park in the UK and is now relying on its visitors to secure it as the top park in the country.
Hardwick Park in Sedgefield is one of three parks in the North East to be nominated in the Fields in Trust UK’s Best Park alongside Gosforth Central Park and Vyner Park.
The 18th Century Hardwick Estate was owned by John Burdon who transformed it into a natural-looking garden. After years of neglect, Durham County Council restored it to its natural beauty with the help of a £4.1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The work was completed in 2010.
Other green spaces valued by their local communities such as nature reserves, community gardens, sports fields and playgrounds, are also included in the nominations.
