SSI contract workers awarded £700,000 by employment judge
Former SSI contract steel workers have been awarded a share of £700,000 by an employment judge over a lack of consultation when the plant closed in Redcar last year.
The works closed around a year ago and all of its 3,000 staff and contractors were made redundant. Today, 154 workers from contractor Hargreaves, who handled raw materials and ran the coke ovens at the plant, were told they would receive a share of the sanction the company have to pay over the way they lost their jobs. This equates to seven weeks pay.
