SSI gallery to open at MIMA in Middlesbrough

One year on after the SSI steelworks closure, a new exhibition is opening at MIMA in Middlesbrough looking back at how Teesside became renowned for its steel industry.

'Teesside World Exposition of Art and Technology' shows artworks, objects and documents showing how Teesside's key manufacturers formed around the extraction of raw materials and the export of goods.

It features archive material and depictions of past productions, as well as looking at the emerging newer industries for Teesside.

The exhibition will feature four galleries which will bring together artworks that portray Teesside’s iron and steel industry from the mid-nineteenth century to now, and demonstrate how it has influenced creativity in the region.

There's also an 'open studio' where people can try protective spectacles used in the steelworks, swatches of artificial fabrics created by Imperial Chemical Industries and sessions for children.
