The annual Blaydon Race takes place on Thursday with more than 4,500 athletes set to compete

More than 4,500 athletes are expected to take part in the traditional Blaydon Race on Thursday.

The 5.6mile athletics race from Newcastle to Blaydon takes place on June 9 every year starting on Collingwood Street in Newcastle, heading west along Scotswood Road and finishing in Blaydon.

Last year almost 4,400 people entered and this year organisers are expecting even more.

The following roads are set to be closed on Thursday between approximately 4.45pm and 9.15pm:

  • Bigg Market

  • Mosley Street

  • Collingwood Street

  • Westgate Road

  • Clayton Street

  • Westmorland Road

  • Marlborough Crescent

  • Railway Street

  • Plummer Street

  • Scotswood Road (rolling closure)
