A spider which caused the closure of a Gateshead nursery after it bit a teacher has been captured.

Bensham Grove Community Nursery School, on Sidney Grove, was closed before the half-term holidays after the teacher was bitten by the spider as she put bananas into a fruit bowl.

The teacher was examined by doctors at the QE hospital in Gateshead for swelling and bruising.

Staff carried out a deep clean last week and a spider was found in one of the traps. They are waiting to find out what type of spider it is.

Both the day nursery and the 4Children child care centre, which are based in the same building, have now re-opened.
