The Durham Light Infantry Museum has closed its doors for the final time. The building, just outside the city centre, has housed artefacts from the historic regiment for nearly 50 years.

Many exhibits will be on show at Palace Green, near the cathedral, in both permanent and rotating collections. They will also feature in other planned events.

However, campaigners who fought the closure insist the artefacts deserve to be kept together, publicly. Here is John Stephenson, from the Save DLI group.

Durham County Council, which ran the museum, says it's an issue of finances and foot-fall, and the exhibits will be more widely viewed in a central location. Here is Neil Foster from Durham County Council.

One visitor today was Ann Dobson, whose father served in the DLI. She says it's a difficult day.
