Plans for a £2.9m transformation of Newcastle's Bigg Market have been revealed by NE1 Ltd, the city's business improvement company.

The aim is to transform the Bigg Market, re-establishing it as a destination with a 'compelling day and night-time economy.'

The organisation hopes to access £1.9 million of Heritage Lottery funding, with additional cash from NE1 Ltd, Newcastle City Council and property owners, taking the total budget to £2.9m.

The plans include a proposed levelling of the street to create four terraced areas that will run the length of the Bigg Market. The terraces will provide outdoor seating areas for restaurants as well as space for the return of market stalls.

Another proposed addition is the introduction of more trees, soft landscaping and improved lighting to reduce anti-social behaviour and highlight architectural details on some of the older buildings.

It is hoped the improvements will encourage people, business and events back to the area. There are further plans for a programme of events and activities that will to keep the Bigg Market active and vibrant.
