Airport bosses have unveiled ambitious plans to transform the former Newcastle air traffic control tower into a £400,000 observation deck.

Until 2001 the airport had a public viewing area - but it was closed following security concerns raised after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Now plans have been revealed that could see the airport open up its old traffic control tower to the public.

Designers at _space architects have worked with the airport to draw up proposals that would see the old tower transformed into a covered observation desk - that would be open to the public.

The plans include:

  • The creation of a modern, covered walkway overlooking the airfield

  • Classrooms for visiting schools

  • Opening up the top of the tower to the public

  • Providing information boards with arrival and departure times so people can see what’s happening in real time.
