Redcar steelworkers to be paid following MP's intervention
Redcar MP Anna Turley has welcomed confirmation that some of the unpaid former SSI contractors will receive full statutory redundancy pay following her intervention.
29 workers employed through Jo Hand Recruitment to work at the SSI steelworks in Redcar are owed a total amount of £285,338.84 in unpaid wages.
Following the closure of the steelworks and Jo Hand Recruitment’s liquidation, they were told that, because of their status as agency workers, they were not entitled to the same statutory redundancy pay as their permanent colleagues.
Anna intervened on their behalf and pressed the case with the Official Receiver.
So far 11 of the 29 workers have received confirmation from the Insolvency Service that they will receive full statutory redundancy pay.
The status of the remaining 18 workers is still to be confirmed.
