Thieves cause thousands of pounds of damage to food banks as they steal presents for needy children
The UK's busiest food bank has been targeted by heartless thieves who stole Christmas presents destined for deprived children.
The crooks smashed their way into the Newcastle West End Foodbank inBenwell causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and snatching toys meant for children who may now receive no gifts at all.
As a result of the thefts the foodbank, which feeds 1000 people every week, has been forced to shut for two days, and it's thought that between 60 and 80 people will miss out on vital supplies.
The callous thieves broke into the foodbank, which is run by the TrusselTrust overnight on Monday December 7th, tearing an outer panel from the building. A hammer and chisel were found near the scene.
It is estimated that the thieves caused around £2,000 worth of damage at a busy time for the food bank.
For its Christmas appeal, the centre had asked for donations of toys worth up to £5 for primary school children.
Parents would receive them with their food parcel so they could have a present to give at Christmas.
Mr Nixon said people could help by donating toys, food, cash for the repair bill or their time.
He added: ""This crime is just stupid. We are giving the toys out for free. If these people had asked for them we would have helped. That is what we are here for, to help people."
