MP asks Delia to help save food factory jobs
Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan has written to celebrity chef Delia Smith to ask her to back the fight to keep the General Mills Jus-Rol site at Berwick open. It follows last week's announcement of the company's proposal to close the food factory, with the loss of 265 jobs.
The Conservative MP is to meet with Prime Minister David Cameron this afternoon to discuss the company's proposal. She will also meet Business Minister Sajid Javid and General Mills management this week.
Trevelyan wrote to Delia Smith because the chef has previously used Jus-Rol products in her recipe books.
The firm, which makes frozen dough products, said the factory could close by autumn 2016, with production relocated to a new site in Manchester.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Mrs Trevelyan said "I will leave no stone unturned in my search to find a solution in order to help protect the jobs of the hard-working staff of the Berwick factory.
“The production of Jus-Rol products in Berwick over 50 years is a reflection of the commitment by the town to some of Britain’s favourite baking products."
