Thousands of wooden crosses have been planted at Saltwell Park in Gateshead to commemorate the lives of service men and women who died in combat.

Volunteers, British Legion Staff and personnel from RAF Boulmer and 101 Regiment Royal Artillery placed the crosses with poppies attached to them on Friday morning ahead of next month's commemorations.

Each cross bears a message in dedication to those who lost their lives fighting for their country.
