Around 100 birds have been killed during an incident of arson in Sunderland, police have said.

The fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately, happened at around 9.10pm on Monday, October 26 in Guildford Street in Hendon.

Extensive damage was caused to an aviary and dozens of birds were killed, including a range of parrots, diamond doves, zebra finches, canaries, love birds, cockatiels and jarrow sparrows.

Superintendent Ged Noble said: "Understandably the owners of the birds are extremely upset about this incident and it is important we find out what happened.

Northumbria Police have said enquiries are ongoing, but that the incident is being treated as arson.
