A new rail service between Sunderland and London will run from December 14th 2015.

Virgin Trains will run the service. The company has also announced a new return service from Stirling to London via the North East.

Customers in Sunderland will see a new 05.40 departure, arriving in London King’s Cross at 09.08.

A return service will depart London KX at 20.00. Virgin says both services will be faster than existing direct trains to Sunderland, by seven minutes southbound and 11 minutes northbound.

Delays and cancellations

The East Coast mainline has been beset by problems in recent weeks.

On Thursday September 24th it reported delays of up to 90 minutes. There were more delays on September 15th and cancellations on Thursday September 3rd when a person was a hit by a train that saw many commuters bound for London from the North East abort their journeys at York.
