Place names 'too blue' for WI fair

An exhibitor at the Women's Institute Centennial Fair has been told to censor some of his wares because they contain place names "too rude" to be shown at the event.

Dominic Greyer runs a project called Lesser Spotted Britain, which highlights amusingly named UK villages such as Wetwang, Cockermouth and Bell End.

But it was too much for one male organiser at the WI event in Harrogate who demanded Mr Greyer cover some "offending signs" with card.

While place names such as Ginge, Pratts Bottom and Pert made it through, others were deemed too rude for the WI audience.

Mr Greyer said he paid "a lot of money" to appear at the fair and covering up his merchandise meant that did not translate into sales.

Despite the incident, the artist, from Manchester, has rebooked for the next WI event and said he will be "interested" to see whether he gets to exhibit.
