Great North Run: Full details on the road closures during the events

Great North Run weekend will see tens of thousands of participants take part in events along the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides.

On Saturday, September 12th, there will be a 5k run, a 'Junior and Mini Great North Run' and a 'CityGames'. These events form part of the weekend of activities, which culminates in the Morrisons Great North Run on Sunday, September 13th.

The staging of the races will mean temporary road closures:

  • Quayside Road: 6:00am - 7:00pm

  • Sandhill: 8:00am - 7:00pm

  • SwingBridge: 8:00am - 7:00pm (still open to pedestrians)

  • Bottle Bank (access to the Hilton Hotel only): 8:00am - 7:00pm

  • Pipewellgate: 8:00am - 7:00pm

  • Hillgate: 8:00am - 7pm

  • South Shore Road (Gateshead): 6:00am on September 7th - 11:59pm on September 13th for the 'Great North CityGames' track

*These are the legal closure times allowed by the relevant local authorities. The actual road closure times when participants are using the roads will be managed by stewards.

  • Anyone requiring access to Queen Street, King Street and Lombard Street on event day can do so using the pedestrian zone on Dean Street

  • The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will remain open during the event

  • Access to the Hilton Hotel and Curzon Place will be via Oakwellgate, Cannon Street and Church Street and Bridge Street

Car parking:

  • The Watergate car park behind The Guildhall will also be closed during this period

  • Access to Baltic Quays resident's car park will not be affected

  • Mill Road car park will be closed from 11:59pm on September 6th - 11:59pm September 14th for the Great North Run Pasta Party exhibition
