£10m grant to put Auckland Castle on the map

Plans are underway to transform Auckland Castle into a major tourist destination with the help of a £10 million grant.

The money has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is hoped that it will significantly increase the number of people that visit Bishop Auckland.

The plans include building an extension to the castle that could host a world-class gallery. The changes will create up to 130 jobs.
