The former South Shields MP David Miliband has criticised his brother's election campaign, saying people "did not want what was being offered".

Speaking publicly for the first time since last week's election, he also ruled himself out of Labour's leadership race, saying: "You don't get second chances at things." He added: "I'm clearly not a candidate in this leadership election… the commitment I have to the job I've got doesn't change."

David Miliband also said he was "not here to endorse any candidate" but that there had to be "absolutely no delusion... about the scale of the challenge" that now faces the Labour party.

David Miliband narrowly lost out to his brother Ed in the last Labour leadership election in 2010. He resigned as the MP for South Shields in April 2013.
