Norman Cornish picture fetches triple its estimate at auction

Norman Cornish died in August 2014.

A picture by Norman Cornish has been sold at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn, North Yorkshire for £14,000.

'Two Men and a Whippet', by the County Durham artist, was originally thought to reach between £3000 and £5000, but tripled its initial estimate.

The picture was first owned by minor and local writer, Sid Chaplin, who passed the picture onto his son Michael.

Norman Cornish, who was a miner for over 30 years, became known for his pictures which captured life in Spennymoor and resonated with miners.

Since his death last year, tributes have been paid to celebrate Cornish's life and career, including an installation at Beamish Museum and a blue plaque outside his house.
