Newcastle City Council launches campaign to tackle low cycling levels

Posters promoting cycling are being put up around Newcastle as the council launches a new campaign to encourage people to get on their bikes.

Cycling levels in the North East are among the lowest in the UK and to tackle this Newcastle City Council has launched 'Cycling In The City'.

The campaign is being funded by the Department of Transport and Public Health team at the council, who aim to spend the next two years hosting free cycling events and improving cycle routes across the city.

The programme the have devised is designed to:

  • Build capacity and confidence

  • Promote and provide information about cycling

  • Train and support cycling and walking champions

  • Provide training and support to families and communities who have low levels of physical activity
