Weather: Will it be a white Christmas?

The odds are shortening for a white Christmas - BUT it is still unlikely.

Temperatures have been cold enough for wintry showers over higher ground recently, but that does not mean this set up will last - with milder air on the way by Wednesday.

At the moment there is a 1 in 5 chance we will see some snow on Christmas day.

However a white Christmas is not the same as when there is a covering of snow on the ground.

The official definition from the Met Office (and for the bookies) is for one flake of snow to fall at a particular location.

Our last 'official' white Christmas was in 2010.
