Plans unveiled for shopping centre in Durham City

How developers see the plans

A shopping centre in Durham City could be transformed to feature a multi-screen cinema, restaurants, cafes, student flats and new shops.

The 130,000 sq ft Gates Shopping Centre is a 1970’s development in the heart of the city, on the banks of the River Wear. It has been sold and the new owners have unveiled new plans for the site.

The £30m development will support 195 construction jobs during the building phase, as well supporting an estimated 120-plus extra jobs when up-and-running.

The developers are keen to hear the views of the public before submitting a planning application to Durham County Council. An exhibition will be held in the central square within The Gates shopping centre on November 28th and 29th.
