A school boy who is 'lucky to be alive' after a prank with a firework went disastrously wrong is now backing Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue's bonfire safety campaign.
15-year-old, Dylan Cosgrove lit a firework in his house while with his girlfriend Erin Easton on the evening of Wednesday 8th October.
The teenager from Blackfell in Washington said he did not intend to set off the firework, which was later found to be a fake:
Dylan's father Michael Stephenson, who was downstairs at the time, thought all the screaming he could hear was coming from the TV until his son came running down the stairs screaming and repeatedly saying sorry.
Mr. Stephenson first called 999 for an ambulance followed by Dylan's mother, Sam Cosgrove, who was out at a restaurant:
Dylan broke his right hand in seven places says everyday life is harder now and wishes he could turn the clock back.
He hopes his support to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Services campaign will help prevent future incidents similar to his:
In the run up to bonfire night Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service's campaign includes a schools education programme, an inspection of outlets storing fireworks, a social media and public relations campaign, as well as a dedicated website.
