Dialect speakers from around the country gathered at Rydal Hall in the Lake District to celebrate the words and phrases that make the English language so rich and diverse.

The Northumbrian Language Society is keen to preserve traditional words from the area at a time when the number of dialect speakers is decreasing.

National Dialect Day was set up six years ago and its founder says regional variations are still important, although they're not always staying the same.

The Northumbrian dialect has thousands of words which are different from Standard English. How many of them do you know?

  • Gan - Go

  • Clarts - Mud

  • Bonny - Attractive

  • Gadgy - Man

  • Netty - Toilet

  • Hacky - Dirty

  • Hitchy-dabbor - Hop-scotch

  • Skiddadlin - Running haphazardly

  • Thi bari morts - Smart lasses

  • Blin - To stop or stay
