The Geordie accent has been voted the funniest accent in the country, according to a new survey by relationship site eHarmony.

It found that a standard English accent is the most popular, regarded as the most friendly, honest, and romantic in the country.

However, even that failed to top the Geordie accent in the humour category, which was a firm first followed by Liverpudlian and Irish.

More than a fifth of those polled said they had gone on a date with someone because of their accent, while others had "played up" how they spoke because they thought it sounded attractive.

Jemima Wade of eHarmony said: "It's not just what you say, but how you say it that can give someone those all-important butterflies."
