The family owners of a sweet shop in Newcastle say they believe it is the oldest in the North East. The shop in Heaton is 115 years old and has been in Alan Clough's family for 80 years.

He began serving when he was a child, standing on a wooden drinks crate so he could see over the counter. His parents, Arthur and Edith, originally ran the shop, with his mother working there until she was 95.

It is now adults who are the most regular customers, with many getting in touch over the internet to seek out favourites from their childhood.

Alan Clough said he has no intention of retiring.
