Alan Pardew defends Kinnear over lack of Newcastle transfers
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has attempted to draw a line under a transfer window which left the club's supporters screaming for answers.
Furious fans took to social media to denounce owner Mike Ashley, controversially-appointed director of football Joe Kinnear and Pardew himself after Monday night's deadline passed without the Magpies having signed a single senior player on a permanent deal.
But the manager, who had pleaded for attacking reinforcements during the final few days of the window, expressed his delight with the loan signing of striker Loic Remy and acknowledged Kinnear's ultimately unsuccessful attempts to bolster his squad.
In a statement issued by the club, Pardew said:
Pardew's comments did little to placate supporters who have seen the club's rivals use the proceeds of the new broadcasting deal to invest heavily in their squads.
Newcastle, of course, had to do just that in January when they swooped for Mathieu Debuchy, Massadio Haidara, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Yoan Gouffran in a bid to avoid relegation - something they eventually achieved by the skin of their teeth - having failed to strengthen significantly last summer.
That, of course, was long before Kinnear's shock return to St James' Park, and his failure to make a breakthrough despite a series of bullish pronouncements has seen his stock fall even further.
The one chink of light for Pardew is Yohan Cabaye's continued presence on Tyneside, although Jensen fears the repercussions of Arsenal's aborted move for him.
