Speed boat racing on the River Tyne

Speed boat racing has been described as the water version of Formula One, and the River Tyne is hosting a stage of the national championship for the first time.

Zapcat racing usually takes place on the sea, so the flat river water will make the race faster and more exciting, and up to five boats at a time will jostle for space.

The race takes place between the Millennium Bridge and the Tyne Bridge. Our cameras were on the boats as they rehearsed for the big race.

For spectators, this location is better as the action is closer than out at sea.
