Shakespeare with a twist
The lines in Julius Caesar have been spoken for 400 years. The Royal Shakespeare Company's latest production of the play brings them bang up to date. The work which was originally set in ancient Rome is now based in modern-day East Africa.
The play is examines a struggle for democracy. It also highlights what happens when a state gets rid of a powerful leader. These are both themes played out across the African continent over the past 50 years.
There is also another link. Lines from Julius Caesar struck a chord with Nelson Mandela during his years in a South African jail. The work has even been referred to as 'Shakespeare's African play'.
Cast member Adjoa Andoh explains the parallels between ancient Rome and contemporary Africa.
The performance features well known faces such as Ray Fearon who plays Mark Antony. His previous work includes Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing.
Julius Caesar is being performed at Newcastle's Theatre Royal until 28 July 2012.
