The 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards), whose headquarters are at Richmond in North Yorkshire, is to disappear.

The Battalion is to be absorbed into the rest of the Regiment in August 2013. The Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has announced that five army battalions are to disappear and 17 units will be axed in a shake up of the armed forces. The reforms will reduce the overall strength of the army by 20,000.

The Green Howards were absorbed into the Yorkshire Regiment in 2006. There was confusion today over whether the name The Green Howards might survive. But people in Richmond said they were dismayed at the ending of a long tradition.
