The affected person, who had recently returned from Uganda, is under specialist care in Sheffield.

New mpox case detected in Leeds

Two more cases of a strain of mpox that is thought to be more transmissble have been detected in the UK, the Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said.

Risk to the UK population from Clade Ib "remains low", according to the UKHSA.

By August, more than 511 deaths had been recorded as a result of the virus in the DRC since the start of the year.

The latest strain of the virus, clade 1b, has triggered global concern because it is more infectious and more deadly. 

On Thursday, the first case of the new mpox strain outside of Africa was reported in Sweden. 

The person became infected during a stay in a part of Africa where a major outbreak of the strain is currently taking place, the statement confirmed.

Mpox has now been detected in 10 African countries, with most of the cases and deaths being in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Eleven cases have been identified recently with the majority affecting unvaccinated people and those who received only one dose of the vaccine.
