Shabana Mahmood said the riots will set back the new Labour government’s efforts to fix the justice system, which was already facing huge court case backlog.

The announcement by Justice Secretary Alex Chalk will also see plans to bring forward legislation that would allow prisoners to be held overseas.

Capacity in British prisons is under serious pressure, with concerns in recent days that a lack of space could see sentencing delayed in some cases.
